The story of Doraemon was created by mistake. In 1969 a Japanese writer named Hiroshi Fujimoto was looking for ideas for his new manga series. But he was having writer’s block and couldn’t think of any new ideas. Then he wished he had a robot that could give him ideas. That day at home he stepped on his daughter’s roly-poly toy and surprisingly on the same day he saw a cat fighting in his neighbor’s house. He combined all three of these things and created a new character.
He made a robot that looked like a cat and its body was rounded like a roly-poly toy. Stress cat is called dora neko in Japanese, hence the character was named Doraemon. But this name is also similar to the Japanese sweet dorayaki, which is why Doraemon’s favourite sweet is shown in this story. The target audience of this story were children of 4th grade or nearby grade, so he made a 4th grader the hero of the show and named him Nobita. At that time the average height of 4th grade students in Japan was 129.3cm, so he designed the entire character of Doraemon around this number. For example, Doraemon’s height was 129.3 cm, weight was 129.3 kg, power output was 129.3 hp and even his sheer circumference was 129.30 cm. Finally, to create Doraemon’s gadgets, Hiroshi Fujimoto observed the problems and situations of common people and imagined futuristic gadgets that could solve these problems. And this is how the story of Doraemon was solved.
